National Memorial - The Sacred Shrine of India's Freedom Movement

About Cellular Jail

Known as Kala Pani, Cellular Jail stands as a profound monument honoring brave Indian freedom fighters with moving galleries and an evening Sound & Light show.

Constructed by the British colonial administration between 1896 and 1906, the Cellular Jail was a maximum-security penal settlement designed for solitary confinement of political dissidents and freedom fighters. Famous inmates included Veer Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and Barindra Kumar Ghosh. Now a revered National Memorial, visitors can explore the seven original wings radiating like spokes of a wheel, the gallows, museum galleries, and witness the poignant narration of the freedom struggle during the Light & Sound show.
